One-Year GSTI (Graduate Student Teaching Intensive) Mentoring Program Experience
I attended Graduate Student Teaching Intensive in Summer 2018 and joined a one-year mentoring program. I was interested in the mentoring program because the end goal of the program is to build an e-teaching portfolio. Among all the available mentors, I decided to join a group mentored by Kristal E. Ehrhardt and David J Paul. Once a month we have a group meeting discussing some topics, such as teaching philosophy, assessment techniques, and teaching experiences. Kristal and Dave encouraged each member of the group to share their thought about some issues. Our mentors are a good listener, and soon our group meeting became a support group where we usually shared our difficulties as a teaching assistant and our mentors usually gave their best advice. For my teaching observation, Dave came to Physics 1140 lab and observed my teaching session using Peer Observation and Evaluation Tool (POET). His feedback on my teaching session was constructive and comprehensive. I was glad to have them as my mentors.
Cool Tools Workshops
I am passionate about teaching and learning. To improve my knowledge and skills, I have attended many cool tools workshops held by the Office of Faculty Development (OFD) at Western Michigan University (WMU). For each cool tools workshop, I have written a summary of the essential workshop information and a step-by-step implementation plan for my professional life and instructional praxis.
